Who we are

Save Snakes Lanka is a non-profit project that helps people in Sri Lanka stay safe around snakes and find rescuers. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and how long we keep it.

Visitors

You can use the site without an account. We do not use advertising cookies.

With your permission we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are most useful. It only runs after you choose “Accept” in the cookie banner; until then nothing is sent to Google. When it runs, Google sets analytics cookies and receives the pages you visit, your approximate location and basic device details, as described in Google’s privacy policy. Advertising features are switched off. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.

Your language, theme and cookie choices are saved in your own browser (local storage) so the site remembers them. They are never sent to us.

When you search for rescuers by location, your position is used in your browser to sort results and is not stored on our servers.

Maps load tiles from OpenStreetMap’s servers, which receive your IP address as described in the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s privacy policy.

Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, such as IP address and pages requested, for security and troubleshooting.

Rescuer applications

When you apply to join the rescuer directory we collect two kinds of information.

  • Public listing details, shown to visitors once an administrator approves your application: listing name, organisation, base town and district, districts covered, languages, public phone and WhatsApp numbers, and years of experience. The map shows the approximate centre of your base district or town, never your address.
  • Private details, seen only by Save Snakes Lanka administrators: your full legal name, email address, private phone number, address and the experience notes you send us. Administrators may add internal review notes.

Why we use rescuer data

We use private details only to review your application, contact you about your listing and keep the directory safe and accurate. We publish public listing details because you asked us to, by applying and giving consent.

Administrators and audit records

Administrators sign in with an email address and password. Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. A session cookie keeps administrators signed in and is used for nothing else.

To protect rescuers and visitors, we keep an audit record of administrator actions, such as sign-ins, approvals and edits, including the time, the fields changed and the IP address used.

Sharing

We do not sell personal information. We do not share private rescuer details with anyone outside Save Snakes Lanka unless the law requires it.

How long we keep data

Rescuer data is kept while your listing is active. If you ask us to remove your listing, we delete your record, keeping only the minimum audit information needed to show that the deletion happened.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you, and withdraw your consent to being listed at any time. Under Sri Lanka’s Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022 you may also complain to the Data Protection Authority.
